Midsummer Already?

I just looked back, and realized ye olde blog has been abandoned since APRIL – and much has happened since then (both good and bad), so I endeavor to do my best and get back to blogging by starting with the obvious… book reviews! Except many, many reviews in the coming days, so let’s go!

The Fun Widow’s Book Tour by Zoe Fishman was… eh. I know it was based on the author’s real experience and maybe a memoir would have served the story better, but this didn’t really flow or entertain or satisfying end, even as an audiobook. It was… fine.

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth hooked me in right away. Gabe and Pippa live near a cliff popular with suicide attempts, and Gabe has a gift for talking people “off the ledge”… until one woman jumps despite his efforts. Adding to the tension is the fact Gabe knew the victim. This was a twisty domestic suspense novel, worthy of the rest of her back catalog of titles, and had me guessing throughout. The ending wasn’t as satisfying as I hoped, but I still enjoyed this one!

Dying by Cory Taylor was a lended memoir from a member of our book discussion, and this slim volume packs a lot into its pages. Cory is dying of a no-longer-treatable cancer, and so she embarks on this memoir to unpack her life, her past, and her feelings on dying and whether euthanasia should be considered. I learned much from this beautifully written memoir.

Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld was just the book I needed! Sally is a writer on an SNL-type show, and her co-writer is dating one of the world’s most beautiful and famous women (hrm, Pete Davidson) and Sally says it could never work in reverse, a mousy writer girl with a hot hunky co-star. Until, of course, she and superstar Noah have a moment, have some serious flirting ,and embark on a relationship. I loved their zingy flirting and romantic interludes, and just found this whole novel charming, funny, and I didn’t want to put it down. I absolutely loved it!

Dirty Laundry by Disha Bose was… fine. Billed as twisty domestic suspense, I just found myself eh-ing through the whole thing. Not memorable, I’m afraid.😕
