I’ve listened to the podcast Happier by Gretchen Rubin for years, and for the last few years, have really loved their annual initiative to create an annual “want to” list… like 18 in 2018, 19 in 2019, and so forth. I’ve done this for years, but really love the structure and format of that style, and of course, I’ve roped in Wes to add things to our lists too. The last few years, we’ve had “his”, “mine”, and “ours”… but needless to say, we didn’t do much with our 20 in 2020 list because… well, you know. It was amazing how many of ours were about exploring the world around us… going to events and new places… doing things like playing golf or going for walks. We did a few on our list for sure, like…
- Get a puppy!
- Better merge our finances and calendars
- bake our own bread at least once (wasn’t this obligatory in 2020?!)
- watch more documentaries
But we epically failed others like travel, events, and getting our wills written (we will… at some point. Adulting is hard.), but it’s okay, because 2021 let’s us put things back on the list we want to, and jettison those we don’t care about as much anymore in light of the world these days. I’ve already started my ’21 list, and I can’t wait to see how we do. A few I’ve put on the list for us/me are…
- Yeah, the damn wills
- learn to play cribbage
- get family photos taken professionally
- submit a novel for publication
- make a Victoria sponge
- spend a day totally unplugged somewhere
- do a virtual 5K together
Some big, some little… all with possibility. C’mon 2021… let’s go!
